Skills Centre gets local unemployed back into work
Chris’s Story
Chris McKena who is 35 Years old and lives in Rochdale was unemployed for more than 6 months. His aim was to learn new and develop existing skills in order to get back into work. Chris came to Training at Hopwood in July 2010 looking to develop his IT Skills.
He has since completed his IT course and has found employment working for the Citizens Advice Bureau in Middleton. Chris recently commented “Without the support from Training at Hopwood I would not have been given this great employment opportunity. The training enabled me to develop skills in a short amount of time and get back into working life”.
Kenneth’s Story
Kenneth Ashton is 53 years old and from Middleton. Before attending Training at Hopwood Kenneth had only been employed twice which made him worry about his further career opportunities. Kenneth started by completing IT followed by health and safety courses. After only one month he gained recognised accredited qualifications. This then gave him the confidence to apply for other job opportunities.
Kenneth recently said “After completing these courses he felt employers valued his initiative to engage in some training and was now more confident and willing to apply for more jobs”.
Kenneth has since gained employment working for the All in One Garden Centre in Middleton.
Steve’s Story
Steve Edwards is 57 years of age and lives in Middleton. When Steve approached Training at Hopwood in July 2010 he had been unemployed for over 3 months after being made redundant from Wincanton after 20 years service. He was concerned his skills were specific to his previous employer and technology had passed him by.
The Orchard team enrolled him onto a short IT course. Steve recently said “The training was a great confidence boost for me. It gave me the skills and drive to move out of my comfort zone”.
Steve found employment 2 weeks later at the local B&Q Store and has been selected to complete other in-house training.
Elizabeth’s Story
Elizabeth who is 49 years of age and lives in Rochdale has primarily worked in care homes and has been a housewife for 18 years.
Elizabeth enrolled onto our health and social care and health and safety courses. These courses help bridge her skills gaps and enabled her to apply for health and social care positions.
Since completing the course she has secured employment with a care home on a full time basis. Elizabeth recently said “The initial advice was excellent from Orchard. All the team were friendly and I would recommend there service to anyone looking to become more employable”.
Susan’s Story
Susan is 50 years of age and lives in Heywood. She was long term unemployed and on jobseekers allowance for approximately for 8 months. Susan wanted to start fresh so she enrolled an IT course arranged by Training at Hopwood.
The course really helped Susan to gain more experience in practical elements of using various packages. Susan said “The service Orchard offered has helped me to gain confidence. The staff at Orchard have worked wonders for my personal outlook on life”.
Susan is now employed working with Debenhams food service in Bury.
Lindsey’s Story
Lindsey completed several courses while with Training at Hopwood. These included Retail, Office Skills, IT, Food Hygiene, and Health and Safety, gaining her recognised qualifications. Within a short amount of time Lindsey built up a portfolio of qualifications while developing her practical and social skills.
Lindsey recently said “I have benefited from the time spent with Training at Hopwood because now I have the right qualifications needed to apply for jobs that I like rather than taking what I’m given”.
Lindsey has since found employment with Wynsors Shoes. Lindsey said “When applying for jobs, employers looked favourably at people who push themselves to develop skills and I feel that’s why I secured the position as a sales assistant”.
Anthony’s Story
Anthony has had previously worked for LBM-telesales before coming to use at Training at Hopwood. Anthony wanted to move direction and try something new. He had a great interest in catering, but had never been given the opportunity to re-train.
Anthony enrolled on to the Hospitality and Catering and Health and Safety course with Training at Hopwood. He also updated his CV with the help of the team.
Anthony recently said “Thanks Orchard I’m now employed full time managing a small team”. He secured employment with a local company.
Anthony added “I would recommend people to join Training at Hopwood to gain the experience they need to get back in to work”.
Stephen's Story
Stephen Holliday is 40 years of age and lives in Castleton, Rochdale. He was long term unemployed and on Job Seekers for 16 months. Stephen worked in the Ventilation industry for ten years and was made redundant in April 2009.
Stephen had always wanted to work in an office, but felt his IT skills would let him down. He started an IT course two weeks later and his confidence started to improve. As his confidence improved he began applying for office type roles. In just over 5 weeks he started work for a Rochdale based company as admin assistant in a busy office.
Stephen has recently said “I’m very happy in my new role and looking to grow further within the business – thanks Training at Hopwood”.
Denise’s Story
Denise Jones is 58 years of age and is living in Rochdale. Denise worked in a retail role for many years before becoming unemployed. She contacted Training at Hopwood as she wanted a change in career.
While with Training at Hopwood she has completed food safety and employability courses. Denise recently said “These courses helped me to stay motivated and continue to employment”.
Denise secured employment soon after completing the course with Rochdale based Kit Bag.
John’s Story
John McKeon who is 54 years old and lives in Rochdale had previously worked in a warehouse as a manager for the last twelve years.
When was referred to Orchard John was flexible and willing to keep his options open. He completed Food Hygiene level 1 and Health and Safety. Soon after completing his courses John felt more confident and continued to apply for suitable positions. In just 3 weeks he secured full time employment at Tesco in Middleton.
